Are Your Pipes Frozen? Here are the Warning Signs!

frozen pipes

Depending on whom you ask, winter can be seen as either a wonderful time of the year or an absolute nightmare. With issues like broken furnaces and power outages, winter certainly comes with its own complications.

But what outcome of freezing temperatures is often seen as the most troublesome? Frozen pipes. Frozen pipes can make life seem ten times more inconvenient and put quite a dent in your wallet for repairs. Luckily, there are some warning signs that you can look out for to protect your home from extreme damage this winter.

No Running Water

One of the most obvious signs that your home has frozen pipes is that there is no water from your faucets. This indicates that there may be a blockage due to ice in your pipes. In some cases, there may still be water coming out of your faucets, but the pressure is noticeably low. Perform a quick check on all the faucets and showers to determine which ones have been affected.

Noticeable Water Damage

A serious sign that your home has frozen pipes is if you can spot water damage. When a pipe freezes and then bursts, it can cause large amounts of water to enter your home, which can cause significant damage. Some warning signs of water damage are light brown water stains, peeling or flaking paint, water pooling, or running water sounds. These are all huge red flags, so if you notice them, you should contact a professional plumber as soon as possible.

Smelly Drains

Frozen pipes may be the culprit if you notice a foul odor coming from your drains. When there is ice in your pipes, it blocks any odors from escaping correctly. If the smell cannot escape, it can cause your drains and your home to smell bad. Although smelly drains can come from regular blockages, if you notice this in the winter, it is likely from frozen pipes.

Visible Frost

Some areas of a home have visible pipes that are located along exterior walls. If you look around your house and notice that frost is forming on or near these pipes, they may have already begun freezing.
